Spring Valley, CA – Deputies responded to Jennifer Orey’s home after she called 911 to report seeing a masked man lurking in the neighborhood, and allegedly shot her accidentally in her own backyard. The San Diego law enforcement agency is reportedly under close scrutiny after the accidental shooting of Jennifer Orey, according to The Blaze. San Diego sheriff’s homicide Lt. Larry Nesbit noted police officers entered Orey’s backyard in search of the masked man and then made contact with the homeowner, who was mistakenly shot.

“You know what, you guys need to get your story straight. She wasn’t shot in the arm she was shot in the chest,” Jennifer Orey’s father Dennis Morgan told Fox 5 News when referencing an alleged sheriff’s office statement that Orey was accidentally shot in the arm by deputies who responded to the 911 call.

San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore stated his deputies thought Jennifer Orey’s open fence gate looked suspicious, so they entered her backyard to search, 10News notes. The San Diego deputies then encountered Jennifer Orey, allegedly causing one of the officers to have a “spontaneous reaction.” San Diego law enforcement officers also note that Jennifer Orey was not armed and did not have anything in her hands at the time of the shooting. Orey allegedly told law enforcement officers that she heard a noise in her backyard and went to find out what caused the sound.

Paramedics transported Jennifer Orey to a local hospital where she was listed in good condition and released earlier this week. Kristen Arzaga-Morgan told 10News that Orey had surgery early Monday to repair wounds from the bullet which allegedly entered her chest and exited through a bicep, injuring a pinky finger as well.

Dennis Morgan maintains that his daughter Jennifer Orey saw a deputy carrying a flashlight and identified herself as the homeowner. The shooting victim reportedly told relatives deputies instructed her to lay on her back until the paramedics arrived. According to Dennis Morgan, Jennifer Orey is the first woman accepted into the Navy’s Air and Sea Rescue team and believed laying on her would cause her death, so she turned onto her side on the ground and waited for medical assistance. The Jennifer Orey shooting case has been turned over to the district attorney for investigation.
