Samsung’s desktop PC business isn’t about to close down. Recent rumors suggested that the company was preparing to ditch desktop PCs in an effort to restructure its PC business.
According to a recent report, Samsung officials were planning to divert the company resources in support of tablets, notebooks, and other personal mobile devices.
An initial report in the Korea Times featured quotes from an unnamed Samsung official who said: “Demand for conventional desktop PCs is going down,” and that “we will allocate our resources to popular connected and portable devices.”
The Samsung official also claimed that resources for tablets and “all-in-one laptops” were being increased while Samsung was reducing its spend on desktop PC’s.
Following the rumors Samsung released a statement in which the company called the rumors “groundless.”
While Samsung may not be ditching its efforts to bolster the desktop PC market, the company does appear to be focusing on other types of personal computing. Samsung recently held a press event to show off its Ativ One 5 Style all-in-one desktop. That new device features Galaxy device aspects alongside a more traditional PC appearance.
A statement received by The Next Web reads:
“The rumor that Samsung is withdrawing from the PC desktop business is groundless. Samsung will continue to offer diverse PC products according to consumer and market needs.”
This is hardly the first time we have heard rumors about a major tech firm exiting the Desktop PC market. HP was rumored to be making an exit in 2012. Meg Whitman eventually announced that HP would remain in the space.
With global sales of desktops slipping after the release of mainstream tablets, the rumors will likely continue as tech firms attempt to figure out how they can maintain healthy desktop PC sales amid a crumbling market.
