Rough And Ready Liverpool Bar Gets Renamed The Cock And Seaman

As well as being famous for the Beatles and an occasionally half-decent football team, once upon a time the city of Liverpool was also world renowned for its docks.

Now working on the docks is thirsty work. Consequently, there’s a lot of pubs in Liverpool and one that was a real favorite with rough and ready dockers after a hard day at the dock has just been renamed with what the Daily Express has suggested could possibly be the campiest name in the UK – The Cock And Seamen.

Formerly know as the Doric pub in the city’s Seaforth district, the new double-entendre moniker has got the locals choking on their pints of real ale and many regulars are finding the new name change hard to swallow.

Avril Jones finds the name Cock and Seaman particularly unpleasant and believes if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. And even if it is, there’s got to be a better name for a boozer than one which suggests all sorts of lurid activity.

“I was shocked when I saw the new pub sign. Why change it in the first place and to change it to something like this. Someone’s obviously having a laugh. It will always be the Doric to me.”

Another local, who refuses to take the name change lying down, is Michelle Dewsbury, who believes the Cock and Seamen is no place for a lady or gentleman to relax over a well-poured pint, or six.

“Can’t believe what they’ve named it – its an absolute joke.”

The name change from the relatively humble Doric, to the all-strutting and in your face Cock and Seamen, was the brainwave of pub chain boss, Ed Atkinson, who believes the cheeky new title will work wonders for the pub.

The 35-year-old who recently took over the pub, just off the dock road, explained to the Liverpool Echo he wanted to celebrate Liverpool’s naval history, but also make people smile when they visited the Cock and Seamen for a good time.

“Seaforth has a long history with the sea, the docks were the largest in the UK when they were built in the ’60s. The Dock became a Freeport in 1984, much like we are Free Houses in the pub world, you could say.”

“Our other pubs have taken influence from their locality when we’ve decided on names so The Cock and Seaman made a lot of sense with the naval history surrounding Liverpool.”

“There is an element of humour in the name but let’s not forget, pubs are meant to be fun places to be in. Scousers are known for our sense of humour, so we hope The Cock and Seaman will be embraced and enjoyed by all who sail in her.”
