Mitt Romney has jumped into the fray concerning President Obama’s recent decision to end deportation for undocumented minors in some cases. While Romney criticized the President’s immigration policies in general he would not answer whether he would keep or overturn the decision if he were elected.
Romney said on the CBS Program “Meet The Nation”,
“First of all, we have to secure the border, we need to have an employment verification system, to make sure that those that are working here in this country are here legally and then, with regards to these kids who were brought in by their parents through no fault of their own, there needs to be a long-term solution so they know what their status is.”
Host Bob Schieffer asked Romney if he would overturn the decision and start deporting kids of undocumented workers. He then pressed Romney repeatedly to answer the question three times and was rebuffed each time.
The first time Schieffer asked the question Romney just ignored it.
The second time he was asked he decided to give a politicians non-answer which was to say that the question was irrelevant because he would pass comprehensive immigration reform quickly.
Romney said,
“Well, it would be overtaken by events if you will, by virtue of my putting in place a long-term solution, with legislation which creates law that relates to these individuals such that they know what their setting is going to be, not just for the term of a president but on a permanent basis,”
The third time Romney was asked he still danced around the question saying,
“We’ll look at that setting as we reach that, but my anticipation is I’d come into office and say we need to get this done, on a long-term basis, not this kind of stop-gap measure.”
Romney said he may be able to support an immigration reform package currently being written by Florida Senator Marco Rubio, but the plan is still being formulated and Romney has no idea what is in it yet.
