Roger Federer exited Flushing Meadows on Monday after falling to 19th-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain.

Federer was ousted from the round of 16 with a final score of 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-4.

After his disappointing performance, which included 43 unforced errors and converting only 2 of 16 break points, Federer said:

“I kind of self-destructed, which is very disappointing. It was a frustrating performance.”

Federer is the holder of 17 Grand Slam titles including five US Open victories. However, he has not been playing up to his own high standards lately. In January, Federer was ousted in the semifinals of the Australian Open and then again in the quarterfinals of the French Open in June. Following those disappointments, the star tennis player exited after only the second round at Wimbledon. That final loss was against a player ranked 116th in the world .

With Monday nights disappointment, it marks the first time that Federer has failed to make at least the quarterfinals in two straight outings.

The loss at the US Open round of 16 also marks the first time since 2002 that Roger Federer hasn’t managed to reach a final in at least one of the Grand Slam tournaments.

Federer is currently ranked No. 7 in the world. That’s the same ranking he had during the 2002 season.

“The story of my life: When I lose, people are shell-shocked to see me play this way,” Federer said.

Before he lost in the round of 16 fans were excited at the prospect of a quarterfinals match between Federer and Rafael Nadal. Together the men combine for 29 Grand Slam trophies.

While Roger Federer continues to falter Rafel Nadal improved his 2013 record to 19-0 on hard courts. Nadal defeated 22nd-seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany with a final score of 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3, 6-1

Are you surprised by Roger Federer’s sudden decline in wins?
