RECALL – Frozen Food Company Recalls Products Amidst Listeria Concerns, A Disease That Can Cause Stillbirth

An American frozen food company has announced a voluntary recall due to fears of their products containing listeria. The company conducting the recall is based in Washington state. CRF Frozen Foods announced their recall yesterday of fifteen of their frozen vegetable products. CRF Frozen Foods, in Pasco, Washington, packages and markets a wide variety of frozen vegetables and fruits, specializing in the Organic market, to a multitude of states across the country and to certain areas of Canada.
The possible listeria contamination was discovered via a routine inspection by state health officials in Ohio. Inspectors discovered the presence of listeria monocytogenes in organic petite green peas and white sweet cut corn.
Listeria is a bacteria that can cause a rare bacterial disease called listeriosis. Listeriosis is a serious infection caused by eating food contaminated with the listeria bacteria. Listeriosis is most dangerous to pregnant women, newborns, adults with vulnerable immune systems, and the elderly.

According to the CDC, approximately 2o percent of those who contract listeriosis succumb to the disease. The two main clinical manifestations are sepsis and meningitis. In the short term, in healthy adults, listeria infections can cause severe headaches, nausea, high fevers, stiffness, diarrhea and abdominal pain. The primary worry about the infection is in pregnant women. If a pregnant woman were to contract listeriosis, the resulting infection can very often result in stillbirths and miscarriages.

The FDA urges the public to not consume any of the items contained in the recall list.
