Despite my post yesterday about today’s GeoCities rapidly approaching closure , I didn’t realize how long it’d been since I’d seen a GeoCities site.
XKCD has done a brilliant tribute , capturing all the late 90s “I’ve got a website!” enthusiasm of GeoCities in its awful blue text on a black backgrounded, broken HTML tagged, blinking GIF-fed, off-centered, Comic Sans heavy, under construction glory. For anyone who tried their hand (and failed) at an early hobbyist site will really appreciate the effort.
It appears that the site itself is the tribute, so I imagine it won’t be viewable for very long. I’ve screencapped some of it, but it definitely doesn’t do the full effort justice.
