Rachel Bloom breaks into song whenever she can—and not just on her musical TV show. The Golden Globe-winning actress is revealing some backstory on those can’t-get-out-of-your-head tunes that she and her co-stars belt out every week on the CW musical comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and she’s even doing interviews with a piano accompaniment now! Bloom spoke to Entertainment Weekly’s Sirius XM radio channel and explained how she came up with some of the most memorable songs that have been performed on the show.

Rachel Bloom revealed that one most popular songs from the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend pilot, “The Sexy Getting Ready Song,” was one of the most fun to shoot. The song spoofs women’s grueling getting-ready rituals, and includes shots of Bloom tweezing, waxing, and stuffing herself into Spanx. Rachel said the song was a hoot to shoot “because the men on set were horrified … [The director] just couldn’t watch it.”

The pop-infused song, “Sex With a Stranger,” which turned up earlier this season, was Rachel Bloom’s spoof of today’s sometimes-creepy pop music lyrics.

“It’s funny that pop music is supposed to represent all of us. Here’s this fetishizing of anonymous sex, and that’s just not what I’m into … I really like exploring the realistic side of pop songs, and the ideas that pop music perpetuates.”

Rachel also dished on the sexy second episode song, “Feeling Kinda Naughty,” which her character sang to her longtime crush Josh’s (Vincent Rodriguez III) girlfriend, Valencia (Gabrielle Ruiz). Bloom said the song was originally “much dirtier” when Crazy Ex was still in talks to air on Showtime. Hard to imagine, because it’s pretty racy as is!

In addition talking about her Crazy Ex-Girlfriend song soundtrack, Bloom made music in an interview with Stephen Colbert. During an appearance on The Late Show, Rachel sang her answers to Colbert’s questions after telling the late night host “anything can be a musical.”

The duo launched into a back and forth conversation (you can see the video below) which included Bloom rapping about life on the set of the CW sitcom, and revealing that her Golden Globe came at a price when she sang, “There’s so much food around the set that I can’t help but go nuts eating cheese and crackers, party mix and donuts / Being a star ain’t as sexy as it sounds, I won a Golden Globe but I put on 13 pounds!”

According to USA Today, Bloom recently talked about the future of her music-filled comedy, and she teased that she would “love” to do a live episode of the show.

‘”I would love to do a live episode. Great idea. I will get on that.”

Indeed, with several Broadway and musical theater vets on the cast, including Bloom’s heartthrob Vincent Rodriguez III, Bloom’s co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna said the cast “could do it in their sleep.”

Rachel also revealed that some of the catchy songs featured on the show started out as spontaneous little tunes she recorded on her iPhone. The show’s soundtrack will even feature the iPhone recordings as bonus tracks. In addition, at home musicians will be to know that they will soon be able to play some of the top tunes featured on Bloom’s comedy, because Bloom said sheet music is on the way.

“You’ve asked, and they’re working on it.”

You can see Rachel Bloom on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Mondays at 9/8c on The CW.
