When fans found out that Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D would have a permanent save file – that is, you could not delete it – fans didn’t take it very well, to put it lightly. You’d think that other publishers would have learned from Capcom’s mistakes, but it appears that Namco Bandai is slow to catch on. Either that, or they’ve got their eye on taking down the used games market, too.
Namco Bandai’s recently released Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions compilation for the Nintendo 3DS also has the permanent save system, according to Wired Game|Life’s Chris Kohler . “I’ve looked all over, even going so far as to ask a Namco Bandai representative, and it doesn’t seem like there’s a way to erase the game data.”
In other bizarre news related to the title, Kohler reports that only your most recent high score is saved – meaning that unless you insist on writing down each of your high scores, you won’t be able to keep track of your progress.
Publishers going after the used game market is understandable to a (very) small degree, but the right way to go about combating their perceived problem is not to inconvenience their consumers. Unless, of course, their plan is to lose said consumers, in which case they’re on the right track.
