Imagine a regular haircut turning out to be the most life-changing event for one after their barber spots a lump in their neck, which results in a rare cancer! This is what happened with a 17-year-old, Owen Norgrove, who went to get his back and sides trimmed, but the barber, Firat Davutoglu, spotted a lump on his neck and advised him to “get it checked out.” After Owen consulted a doctor, he was informed that it was Hodgkin lymphoma.

According to a Mirror UK report published in September 2025, the incident dates back to January 2024 when, upon his barber’s suggestion, Owen Norgrove visited his general physician and was referred to a specialist. A series of tests determined that the boy had a rare cancer that occurs in the lymphatic system.

Following his diagnose, Owen reportedly underwent aggressive chemotherapy sessions for five months at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and also received support from the Teenage Cancer Trust.

While speaking with the publication, Owen reflected on the day he had gone for the haircut and shared, “I came to the barber as I do every few weeks. Suddenly, Firat stopped and said to me, ‘Do you realise you’ve got a lump on your neck? You might want to get that checked by a doctor.’”

“I’m really grateful that the barber noticed the lump on my neck; he didn’t have to do it, and it could’ve led to more serious things. But I’m very grateful,” he added.

His mother, Hayley, also remembered visiting the doctor upon the barber’s suggestion. She stated that her son wasn’t diagnosed until January 2024, but by that stage, the lump had already grown considerably and become clearly visible on his neck. “Firat really helped Owen have the cancer diagnosed much quicker so he could start treatment sooner,” she said.

The 45-year-old shared that Owen’s chemo started a few weeks later and that his last session was on May 1, 2024.

“Then early June he was in remission, so he’s been in remission for just over a year now. It was hard, as he had the strongest chemo for the cancer he had; it was brutal stuff. It would reduce his immune system to zero; he had no immune system to fight anything that was going on. You just don’t expect cancer at that age; it was a shock for everyone. But everyone rallied around, and we had a strong support network. But with his age and resilience, his body fought back.”

Following his treatment, Owen also met Firat again, who recalled advising the 17-year-old to see a doctor. “Maybe it would be something easy, but then maybe it was something not as well. His haircut is done, and I didn’t see him for five or six months. He came with his dad, and I didn’t remember him because he had chemotherapy and had no hair. His dad told me the story, and I feel emotional.”

“He won the cancer, and that’s what’s important now. He’s clear now and I hope he’s going to have a long life, healthy, and he’s never going to see the hospital and doctors again,” he said on a concluding note.
