In a disturbing new crime story, a North Carolina police officer was fired after a frightening video showed him repeatedly punching a woman to the ground while trying to arrest her. According to the Mirror, the incident occurred in Shelby, North Carolina, on May 29 and was captured by a doorbell security camera. The video has been making rounds on the internet and has fueled public outrage, protests, and calls for accountability.

The woman involved in the case is identified as 34-year-old Cherrie Moore, while the identity of the fired cop has been kept undisclosed. However, CNN obtained an arrest warrant that named Officer Karson Hyder as the officer involved in Moore’s case. At the start of the video, Moore and the officer are seen standing together with their hands touching. Minutes later, the officer forcefully takes her to the ground and starts to repeatedly punch her. Meanwhile, Moore is heard saying:

“I don’t have a warrant. What are you doing?”

The officer ignores her calls and continues to punch her primarily in her face and upper body. Two other officers intervene as one tries to take Moore away and stop the assault. The other officer tried to place Moore in handcuffs.

Moore sustained a broken nose, black eyes, and a cut lip.

The developing story took an unexpected turn when The Charlotte Observer cited court documents that alleged that Moore grabbed and ripped the officer’s uniform during the encounter. She was reportedly charged with breaking and entering, resisting an officer, and assaulting a government employee.

Police Chief Brad Fraser said in a statement that the officers were conducting a criminal investigation when they “encountered a suspicious female in the area.”

It’s unclear if Moore is actually a suspect; regardless, the officer has been terminated following an administrative investigation. Fraser said during a press conference:

“As seen in the video currently circulating on social media, the actions taken by one officer during that encounter are disturbing and inappropriate. A second officer can be seen intervening to stop those actions.”

“While this incident does not reflect the values of the Shelby Police Department, it does reinforce the importance of holding ourselves to the highest standards of conduct.”

This comes after Shelby police turned over their administrative investigation findings to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) for an independent review of any criminal violations. Fraser added:

“This step is being taken to ensure transparency, accountability and public confidence in our actions as a law enforcement agency.”

As police and SBI take the required steps to investigate the case further, the incident has been extremely emotional and devastating for Moore’s family. Moore’s father, Gregory Moore, said:

“I was so upset… Why is this man doing this to my daughter? What reason? And she’s sick.”

Reportedly, Moore struggles with mental health issues and substance abuse. She was not taking her medication at the time of the incident and repeatedly asked officers to call her father and requested mental health assistance.

According to Moore’s father, she often took walks around the neighborhood because “her mind just won’t let her sit down.” He added:

“She walks around like she has no place to go. And the man must have thought she really didn’t have a family, that nobody loves her.”

Meanwhile, Moore’s attorney, Ronald Haynes Jr., stated that the impact of this incident will stay with Moore for the rest of her life and is more than just physical. He said:

“She’s going to be scarred for the rest of her life. When she sees a police officer, that’s what she’s going to think about … so she ain’t going to be able to trust no man, no police officer, nothing anymore.”
