Wii Music arrived in 2008 to hoots of derision from gamers and many in the gaming press. This response was partly based on its showing that year at E3, which has quickly become one of the more cringeworthy unveilings in E3 history, up there with Riiiiiiidge Racer and all that:
Indeed. The game arrived later that year, and got a bit of a panning from critics. Despite its good-hearted and jolly nature, the cool reaction was understandable. Sadly, as a concept, Wii Music didn’t really work.
So naturally, Nintendo’s top designer is now thinking about a sequel … uh, wha-?
Speaking to Techland, daddy of Mario , Zelda , Donkey Kong and (less illustriously) Wii Music Shigeru Miyamoto noted, “There’s a lot of potential still in Wii Music , I think. Because we’re going to change it up, a new interface is coming, and all of that.” When asked if that was an announcement of Wii Music 2 , Miyamoto offered no denial, only cryptically suggesting that Mario could play a part in a follow-up.
It’s always been fashionable to mindlessly bash Wii Music , but I’m not going to hate on this possible sequel because (a) it’s Nintendo and they have a very high hit rate and (b) I sort of like seeing gloating internet idiots put in their place.
