Nicki Minaj And Meek Mill: ‘We’re Like Any Other Couple In The Hood’

From the archive: published Sep 24, 2015, 11 years ago. Details may have changed since.

Apparently, money doesn’t change Nicki and Meek. Minaj relates her connection with Mill as something quite similar to everyday “hood life” — couple’s version.

While not to misconstrue Nicki’s meaning, there’s a lot of drama that happens in the hood, daily. And from observing the couple’s social presences, recently, similar drama has been in attendance. However, in an interview with GQ, Minaj and Mill elaborate on their relationship — as to put the haters to rest and settle any lasting rumors about the duo. After Meek deemed their relationship “un-normal,” Nicki chimed in with a clarification, as follows.

“I definitely think we have a normal relationship off-camera. We’re like any other couple in the hood. We’re growing as a couple and as people and as human beings, but we still have our careers. And I think probably the only thing that makes it un-normal is that we’re both successful artists, and that’s probably not normal.

But other than that, our feelings are very normal. Like, if I were to speak to a hundred girls right now about what they go through with their boyfriend, we’d probably have stuff in common.”

While the couple doesn’t necessarily live the “hood life” any longer, the relevancy is circumstantial — petty fights, arguments, frustrations, “I hate you”s followed by “I love you”s, etc. However, real “ghetto” relationships have so much more going on in the background. The main issue with growing up in the hood and having “hood problems” is finances. It’s rare that someone stays in such an area by choice.

As Nicki said in the interview, they’re both successful together as well as apart. Both came from humble beginnings. That success is a visual to young people around the world. To elaborate, Alex Kotlowitz spoke about poverty in the 1994 documentary, Hoop Dreams. He stated as follows.

“The concentration of poverty means that ghetto residents have too few role models. Without knowing anyone who has succeeded in school and gone on to college and a professional career, children in the ghetto can’t imagine how they might succeed.”

At this moment, Nicki and Meek are role models for this generation. While they’re an encouragement in letting people know that they can change their mindsets and get out of their situations, they are different from “any other couple in the hood” because they no longer have the financial struggles that accompany hood life — which bring with them all kinds of other problems and attachments.

On the contrary, they’re more like Ace Hood ‘s situation from a few years ago. According to Forbes, Ace learned a lot of valuable lessons early on in his career, due to hood mentality. While he was technically out of the ghetto, it was still in him. However, after nearly losing everything, he bounced back after seeking advice from role models.

So, while Nicki Minaj relates her relationship to that hood couples, that should be taken with a grain of salt and weighed for extra additives. She’s not encouraging or promoting ghetto tendencies. However, she was empathizing with the general public — saying that they have issues just like every couple.
