Niall Donoghue was one of the rising stars in the hurling world, leading his team in Galway to a title in 2012, but now his life has been cut short.

The 22-year-old star died suddenly in his home in County Galway, Ireland. Donoghue was considered one of the brightest young talents in the sports of hurling, which is wildly popular in Ireland but little known elsewhere.

His team, Galway GAA, issued a statement offering condolences after the death of Niall Donoghue.

“On behalf of the entire Galway GAA community, at home and abroad, we extend our heartfelt sympathy to Niall’s family and especially his father Francis, brother Shane, sister Orla, uncles, aunts, and all his relatives,” the statement said, adding, “We offer all our condolences also to the members of Niall’s club and parish, Kilbeacanty, to his fellow inter-county panellists on the Galway hurling team, and to his many friends and colleagues.”

Hurling is an outdoor sport of ancient Gaelic and Irish origin, believed to be more than 3,000 years old. Players use a wooden stick called a hurley to hit a small ball between their opponent’s goalposts, either over the crossbar or below it into a net contested by a goalkeeper. Players can catch the ball and carry it for up to four steps before they must strike it with the hurley.

Niall Donoghue played a key role in Galway’s rebuilding. After a series of disappointing seasons, the team turned a youth movement led by Donoghue. After making a brief appearance during the 2011 season, Niall played a larger role in 2012 as Galway re-joined the elite.

Though he only lived to 22, Niall Donoghue had quite an accomplished career between his amateur and professional teams, making a total of seven championship appearances.
