NFL rumors have been swirling around Demario Davis this week. The former Arkansas State Red Wolves star is a free agent, and he’s moving up the rankings because a lot of the top-level free agents have already been signed to contracts. Thus far, Davis has visited with several teams in the National Football League. According to USA Today, Demario might be set to leave the New York Jets to sign with the Cleveland Browns.
Demario Davis is a qualified starter in the NFL. He’s started every single game for the New York Jets over the past three seasons. Davis was a third round selection in the NFL Draft in 2012. Then-Jets head coach Rex Ryan was a big fan of Demario because he saw some of the same leadership skills previously seen in Ray Lewis, whom Ryan coached when he was an assistant coach with the Baltimore Ravens.
Demario Davis shouldn’t have too much of a problem finding a home in the NFL. Last season, he recorded 90 tackles and two sacks. In the two previous seasons with the New York Jets, he was able to record more than 100 tackles. Those are pretty good numbers, so executives and coaches in the National Football League are going to keep him in mind. Davis might need to wait until after the upcoming NFL Draft, though, because teams are certainly going to take a look at college linebackers.
In a move that wasn’t a surprise to many in the NFL, the Cleveland Browns have been taking a beating in free agency. The team was hoping that the hiring of Hue Jackson would have prevented that, but players are proving that management doesn’t have a lot of trust from the players. Thus far, the Browns have lost Pro Bowl safety Tashaun Gipson to the Jacksonville Jaguars, wide receiver Travis Benjamin to the San Diego Chargers, right tackle Mitchell Schwartz to the Kansas City Chiefs, and Pro Bowl center Alex Mack to the Atlanta Falcons.
Demario Davis isn’t going to generate a lot of headlines because he’s not one of the more known stars in the NFL. He’s definitely not going to be generating interest by signing with the Cleveland Browns. However, Davis is a very solid player that can help teams win games.
