New ‘Supergirl’ Episode Spoilers: How Will Kara Feel About Alex Coming Out In This Week’s Episode Of ‘Supergirl’?

From the archive: published Nov 13, 2016, 9 years ago. Details may have changed since.

The teasers we have had so far for this week’s new Supergirl episode suggests that Alex’s revelation about her own sexuality will be a major plot point in this particular episode. There is a suggestion that Alex might suspect that Kara isn’t entirely comfortable with what she’s saying about herself. Of course, this emotional stuff has to be worked in between all of the superhero action.

We knew long before this season hit the airwaves that someone in the series was going to come out as gay or bisexual. As noted by Variety, the show runners had already suggested this months ago.

The CW shows have always had a habit of trying to expand their diversity, both in regards to gender and race, as well as sexuality. The CW’s superhero shows have been no exception to this. From having a gay police chief on The Flash to making Mister Terrific on Arrow gay as well, The CW shows are trying to better reflect society.

As Andrew Kreisberg – one of the producers on Supergirl – puts it to TVLine, “Alex and Kara have a little misunderstanding, actually….She thinks Kara might not be OK with it.”

But it’s fairly clear that in Supergirl, it would be highly unlikely that Kara would be prejudiced or actually have any objections whatsoever to Alex’s new relationship with her police detective friend, Maggie Sawyer. So obviously, there has to be more to Kara’s seeming discomfort than that.

But according to Kreisberg on TVLine, this misunderstanding between the two sisters is quickly cleared up. It turns out that Kara blames herself for holding Alex back from her self-discovery of who she is as a person. After all, ever since she came to earth Alex has made it her job to look after her almost constantly. In fact, the reason Alex joined the DEO was to protect Kara.

“Kara feels like their entire childhood was relegated to worrying about keeping Kara’s secret, so she feels awful that, maybe if she hadn’t come along, Alex would have been able to reconcile this aspect of herself sooner,” as Kreisberg puts it.

Unlike what often happens in real life when someone reveals they are gay, Alex will receive a good deal of support.

“As people will find out this season, everybody treats Alex with the love and respect that she deserves.”

Melissa Benoist as Supergirl. New Supergirl episode surprises.

Of course, the entire episode isn’t about this particular plot point. There is also a creature of the week for Supergirl and crew to take on. This new Supergirl episode – as seen in the teaser on YouTube – seems to take a much darker and scarier turn than most of what we’ve seen before. The teaser gives a very X-Files kind of vibe.

For the most part, Supergirl – like The Flash on The CW – tries to be fairly upbeat, colorful and positive. So this very different tone comes as a bit of a surprise. The episode, entitled “The Changeling,” seems to start with a parasitic creature draining the life out of people at a creepy lab.

There appears to be only one survivor at the lab, and the DEO squad naturally makes the classic horror movie mistake of packing him up and bringing him home to DEO headquarters. Obviously, that’s not going to work out well for anyone.

In this new Supergirl episode, we also get the debut of James Olson’s new superhero persona, The Guardian. The Guardian has to assist the DDO when Supergirl loses some – or perhaps all – of her powers to this alien parasite. Just how comfortable the audience will be with the idea of James – aka Jimmy – Olson suddenly playing superhero is an open question. And will he play a role in the big crossover?
