Capcom announced at San Diego Comic Con today that the company will be bringing back the classic 2D action-platformer series Strider early next year.
In development by Double Helix, the studio who is also behind the Killer Instinct reboot, the new Strider isn’t a 3D game like that other game we won’t mention. Instead, Capcom and Double Helix will be going with the “2.5D” route; Strider will be a fast-paced action-platformer, true to its roots.
This time around, the game will take place on a 2D plane with 3D graphics.
“The year is Meio: 048, on an alternate dystopian future of Earth. The whole planet suffers under the oppressive, iron-fisted rule of the mysterious and omnipotent Grand Master Meio,” the game’s description reads (via Gamezone ).
“An expert in sabotage and assassination, Hiryu is the youngest ever recruit to attain a Special A-Class in the hellish Strider training program, and is the only man capable of achieving the mission to eliminate Grand Master Meio.”
In a post on the Capcom Unity blog, the publisher explains that Hiryu – the game’s protagonist – will be able to earn upgrades throughout the game. In essence, the new Strider is a mix of the old formula with the tried and true “Metroidvania” formula.
Here’s more on how the game will play, as per the description:
“Perform breakneck acrobatic jumps and mid-air flips while slicing through enemies with Hiryu’s indestructible ‘Cypher’, a plasma charged weapon that can take on a number of properties. Alternatively, use the climb sickle to gain the high ground, and hit them with a surprise Kunai attack, or call on support allies for some extra muscle when the going gets tough.”
Strider will be coming to the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, but Capcom says that it will also be making its way to current-gen consoles as well. Whether or not those versions will release day-and-date isn’t known.
