A New Mexico mother who was arrested and charged with incest involving her biological son ten years ago is in legal trouble again. This time it is multiple break-ins and vandalism targeting an older woman’s house.
Identified as Monica Mares, 46, she broke into a home in Clovis, New Mexico. She stole kitchen countertops and light fixtures from the home. Furthermore, she flooded the property and the yard by leaving the water turned on.
The recent mugshot of Mares showed her with a shaved head and facial tattoos, different from how she looked in 2016. She also appears to have lost some weight. In 2016, Mares had an affair with her then-19-year-old son, Caleb Paterson.
The mother and son were found guilty of incest in March 2017. They were sentenced to three years’ probation and no contact with each other. The son had explained he wanted to save his mother from abusive relationships and take care of her.

When police arrested Mares, she explained why she broke into the home. She told Clovis Police Department Captain Roman Romero that “she had no place to go, and the weather, thunder, and lightning gave her headaches.”
The 66-year-old homeowner was out of town while her neighbor, 69-year-old Virginia Pritchett, saw Mares breaking into the house. She called her best friend, who is currently in Texas, to report the break-in. Her house had been broken into three times in the previous three to four months.
Pritchett suspects Mares was responsible for all these break-ins: “It’s too coincidental.” She added, “The neighbor said she saw the gate wide open in the back, which is what happened before, and she said she saw a light shining and saw them in the laundry room. They knew exactly where to go.”
She further explained how they knew where to go in the house and what tools to use. They unscrewed the locks and whatever work the handyman had done. Pritchett also found out about Mares’ criminal history. She stated, “I’ve seen articles on Mares; she torched a home and set fire to a backyard while on probation. She’s a thief who has broken into homes like my friend’s before.”
Pritchett wanted the justice system to punish Mares. “And it just keeps going on. I’m mad as hell at her right now.” She hopes this time the justice system will put Mares in an “institution, wherever that is.”
Pritchett explained she was going to move into the home to support her friend, who did not want to be identified and had lived with her for five years. Currently, the two are afraid of these break-ins, “What if we’re living there and somebody breaks in and has a gun or something?”
She feels like these people have been watching the house for a long time and is now helping her friend press charges against Mares. Mares is being held at the Curry County Adult Detention Center.
