Nazare, Portugal, is attracting hundreds of surfers with record-setting waves. The St. Jude’s Day storm is blamed for killing at least 15 people and leaving a wide path of destruction throughout Europe. However, surfers are taking advantage of the monster waves.

The village of Nazare is well-known as a destination for surfers, but this weeks waves may have broken a record. In 2011, Hawaii native Garrett McNamara rode a wave measuring 78 feet. He currently holds the Guinness World Record for Largest Wave Ever Surfed.

In January, McNamara rode a wave in Nazare that was estimated to be close to 100 foot . Although it was not yet confirmed, he may have broken his own record.

As reported by CBS News , Brazilian surfer Carlos Burle may have surpassed McNamara’s previous records. This week’s wave was estimated to be more than 100-foot-tall.

Burle was joined by friends Maya Gabeira and Andrew Cotton. Although all three are experienced surfers, Gabiera was overwhelmed by a large wave and knocked unconscious.

When Burle realized what happened, he located Gabeira and took her to the shore. She was resuscitated and taken to the hospital for further treatment. As reported by USA Today , Gabeira suffered a broken ankle , but she is recovering well.

After rescuing his friend, Burle got back into the water. Although Nazare, Portugal, is known for producing large waves, Burle said luck is definitely a factor:

“It was luck. We never know when we will be catching the wave. I still hadn’t surfed any wave and everyone had already had their rides… For me, it was a big adrenaline moment… “

Burle’s decision to continue surfing paid off. He caught the biggest wave of his life and may have broken a world record. The Brazilian surfer credits McNamara for bringing attention Nazare, Portugal’s monster waves. He said if it was not for McNamara, he never would have traveled to the small fishing town.
