Dreamworks Animation and 20th Century Fox recently released the first trailer for their upcoming family flick Mr. Peabody & Sherman . You can find the clip embedded below.

The film tells the story of a little boy named Sherman and a brainy talking dog named Mr. Peabody. As it turns out, the boy is the chatty canine’s child. It’s probably best if you don’t spend too much time trying to wrap your head around that concept.

The Mr. Peabody & Sherman movie comes from director Rob Minkoff, the man responsible for such memorable motion pictures as The Lion King , Stuart Little , and The Forbidden Kingdom . Minkoff also directed the Eddie Murphy flick The Haunted Mansion , though we won’t hold that against him.

Here’s the official synopsis for Mr. Peabody & Sherman :

“Mr. Peabody, the most accomplished dog in the world, and his mischievous boy Sherman, use their time machine—the Wabac — to go on the most outrageous adventures known to man or dog. But when Sherman takes the Wabac out for a joyride to impress his friend Penny, they accidently rip a hole in the universe, wreaking havoc on the most important events in world history. Before they forever alter the past, present and future, Mr. Peabody must come to their rescue, ultimately facing the most daunting challenge of any era: figuring out how to be a parent. Together, the time-traveling trio will make their mark on history.”

In order to bring these characters to a brand new generation of children, Rob Minkoff and company assembled an impressive cast of voice actors. Modern Family alum Ty Burrell provides the voice of Mr. Peabody while Max Charles tackles the role of Sherman.

Also included among the cast are Stephen Colbert, Leslie Mann, Stanley Tucci, Patrick Warburton, Ariel Winter, Lake Bell, Zach Callison, and Allison Janey as Sherman’s mom.

Although the characters visit a number of different eras during their time-traveling adventures in Mr. Peabody & Sherman , Rob Minkoff said they’re saving a few things for a possible sequel. The director discussed the future projects with the folks at Crave Online .

The filmmaker explained:

“I think from the very earliest conversation about the movie, the idea of going to more than one. We’re looking at different kinds of time travel movies. Obviously, you’re right, ‘Back to the Future’ sort of goes to one place and a lot of them do, but we really wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to do a bit of a tour, travelogue, to various different times and places.”
