After three years as a couple, 31-year-old actress Minka Kelly and 37-year-old Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter have called it quits.
Jeter has dated a string of celebrities before Kelly, but the pair were very quiet about their relationship when speaking to press. Last year, Kelly was asked by GQ about the veracity of a rumor that Jeter had intervened for her in first class during a flight, and she snipped:
“Do people think that somewhere in my brain, I think Derek can save me from someone telling me my dog can’t fly?” she asks. “If that’s the way I worked, he would have left me a long time ago.”
Rumors circulated that Kelly and Jeter were set to marry last year at Long Island’s Oheka Castle, but the pair showed no signs of impending nuptials. The reasons behind the split are unknown, but E! posited that the pair may suffer from the relationship-threatening affliction of conflicting work schedules:
Jeter, 37, is skyrocketing in his baseball career, becoming the second player to reach 3,000 hits as a shortstop—a feat which was the focus of a recent HBO documentary, Derek Jeter 3K .
Meanwhile, 31-year-old Minka has been kickin’ booty in Miami for the new Charlie’s Angels television series that premieres next month.
A rep for the couple issued the stock-standard statement that the split was “amicable,” and that the pair will “remain friends.” The rep added that the two “still really care for each other.” Prior to their involvement with one another, Kelly dated Donald Faison and John Mayer, and Jeter dated pretty much everyone- including Mariah Carey, Tyra Banks, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, Vanessa Minillo and Jordana Brewster.
