Cloud web hosting provider Media Temple announced an impressive first yesterday : the worlds first virtual Leopard Server.
The new package powered by Parallels Server for Mac, offers Leopard VPS hosting on Xserve hardware. The Xserves run 2 x 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5400s with 32GB 800MHz DDR2 RAM and 3x300GB 15,000-rpm SAS with 16MB disk cache drives on a Xserve RAID Card. The new service is offered in private beta, with the Xserves split into 8 virtual machines, with each client given a min spec of 2 GB of RAM and two cores of CPU resources.
I’m a big fan of cloud hosting, and this site is hosted on MediaTemple, although I don’t get anything for writing this post (nor are they are site sponsor… yet). The idea of cloud hosting went through some rough patches when first launched, but after years of shared hosts, then a reasonable share of dedicated boxes as well, hosting with MT couldn’t have been easier so far. Best thing: if resources ever become stretched, press a button, get some more resources, not having to wait days while monkeys tend to a box in a colocation center. Leopard Server delivered this way: sweeter again.
