May The 4th: ‘Star Wars’ News We Wanted To Hear But Didn’t
From the archive: published May 4, 2015, 11 years ago. Details may have changed since.
May the 4th has become a day synonymous with Star Wars. It is a day we circle on the calendar as a day we are likely to get some of the latest and greatest news from the “galaxy, far, far away.” This year, getting news on May the 4th was asking maybe a little too much. Just a few weeks removed from Star Wars celebration Anaheim, what news could Lucasfilm have missed?
Of course, the most glaring omission from Star Wars Celebration that had many hoping May the 4th might bring was the possibility of a release date for the original theatrical trilogy. In July of last year, Making Star Wars reported that Reliance Media Works had been working to convert the original unaltered trilogy to 4K. This brought up the possibility of some sort of theatrical release in the near future.
AMC Theaters announced on May 1 that they were planning a Star Wars Marathon to lead up to the December 18 release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Could we be seeing this 4K version on the lead up to the next installment? The announcement failed to state which version they would be showing. It was hoped that May the 4th would give us a clearer answer. It did not.
Other announcements we didn’t receive on May the 4th included other pertinent dates. We have yet to hear when the first official trailer will debut. Up to this point, we have only been treated to two teasers. We also haven’t seen any indication to a poster. Again, we only have a generic teaser poster.
We may not have received the announcements that we wanted on May the 4th, but they did give us some nice tidbits of information on the day before “Star Wars Day.” On Sunday, May 3, StarWars.com did announce when the new merchandise was to be released for the upcoming The Force Awakens. In what the official website has dubbed “Force Friday,” all merchandise will go on sale September 4. If that day sounds familiar, “Force Friday” will also be the day the Journey to the Force Awakens book titles will release. I guess we should start saving now.
Despite the lack of official information being released, was May the 4th “Star Wars Day” okay with you? Are you looking more forward to “Force Friday” in September? Feel free to leave your comments below. Regardless, I am sure we haven’t seen the last of Star Wars news.
