President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump shared a brief private moment during the annual Congressional picnic on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, D.C., on May 19, 2026.

The exchange took place after they both delivered speeches to key members of the Trump administration. Lip reader Nicola Hickling later reviewed the interaction. Following Melania’s speech, Donald Trump reportedly complimented her, saying, “Wonderful speech, I loved that,” according to the lip reader.

After his speech, Hickling said Trump turned to his wife seeking her reaction, and Melania responded with a “yes,” appearing to approve of his remarks in front of key members of the administration, according to The Mirror.

However, online users took to X and mocked his speech and had a mixed reaction to the couple’s warm union amid long-standing rumors of divorce.

Some called the 79-year-old “an incredible husband.” Several others slammed  Melania as an “immigrant” and said she could do herself a favor by learning some grammar, allegedly making fun of her accent. “Remember when she plagiarized Michelle Obama? Now that was funny,” one user wrote.

“Both of them are still trying to master the English language,” another added. “They look so good together. He’s the most powerful man in the world with the classiest woman in the world,” a third added.

According to the outlet, the couple was also spotted chatting casually as they walked down the stairs together. Nicola Hickling said Trump gestured while speaking, and Melania encouraged him, saying, “Come on, let’s go downstairs.”

Once they reached the end of the stairs, the 79-year-old Republican president cautioned his wife to “watch that step” before they greeted attendees and posed for a quick photo. Trump performed his signature fist pump and told people he was having fun.

Donald Trump also praised First Lady Melania Trump during a speech on Wednesday, highlighting her popularity and public approval. “We’re truly blessed to have such a first lady; she’s been so popular,” he said.

Despite a series of negative reactions to his wife’s passion project, Trump praised the documentary MELANIA, which was released in the theatres exclusively on Jan. 30, 2026. “See that movie, it became number one,” he said, adding that it later performed well on popular streaming platforms.

Speculation about Donald and Melania Trump’s marriage has been a topic of discussion ever since Trump began his second term in 2025. Reports suggest that Melania prefers to keep a low profile during official events and travels selectively with her husband. She allegedly likes to make her son Barron a priority and spend time with him.

Trump critic and author Michael Wolff also made striking claims about the couple’s relationship. He wrote about it in his book titled All or Nothing: How Trump Recaptured America.

The author argues that even people close to Trump are not aware of the couple’s dynamics in their relationship. He described their marriage as more transactional and private rather than a conventional one

“That arrangement, an American marriage on a coolly transactional basis, might be difficult to explain in open court and to ‘family values.” Wolff said in his book.
