Lindsay Ellingson used a 3D printer to upgrade her wardrobe for Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2013.

As previously reported by The Inquisitr , the 2013 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was streamed online live for the world to watch .

While some people may have been interested in the $10 million fantasy bra , the geeks among us are probably more interested in how technology is changing even the fashion world. 3D printers can be used for all sorts of purposes. The idea is that individual layers of plastic can be created one at a time and build any three dimensional object.

Even NASA is going to launch a 3D printer in 2014 , and many companies are working on 3D printable prosthetic devices. The price of these 3D printers has dropped dramatically in these past few years, opening up a tech revolution to the entire world.

For example, one father used a 3D printer to create a prosthetic hand for his disabled son . There’s been many ideas being created and the best part is this tech revolution is cheap enough for the average joe. But unfortunately, not everyone is happy with this progress. One of the most controversial ideas is the 3D printer gun design . Despite 3D printers producing plastic pieces — guns require metal or they’ll fall apart within a few shots — politicians have been freaking out and ordering these 3D printable handguns to be banned . In response, Pirate Bay started hosting the designs , along with 3D printable bullets , and a new rifle design that shoots 14 shots .

Despite the controversy, 3D printers are still invading the fashion world, with the first big example being Lindsay Ellingson’s wings 3-d printed wings. First they scanned Ellingson’s body for measurements and then generated the wings, which were decked out with millions of Swarovski crystals.

This actually isn’t the first time that high fashion has used 3D printers. Dita Von Teese wore a 3D printed gown and it’s possible to purchase 3D printed bikinis.

Runway model Barbara Fialho wants 3D printers to play even a bigger role in the fashion world:

“It’s great to see all these barriers being broken, new ideas, new ways to design. It’s amazing.”

Duann Scott, who works for the company called Shapeways who crafted the wings for Lindsay Ellingson, says 3D printers can be used to meet the needs of consumers exactly:

“It’s perfect because in fashion and jewelry, there are seasons — every season there’s something new, and with 3-D printing you can do something very new in a short period of time. Because everything’s on demand… with 3-D printing supply exactly meets demand.”

What do you think about Lindsay Ellingson’s wings? How else do you think 3D printers should be used?
