With Deadpool currently changing the landscape of superhero movies as we know it, it was only a matter of time before other comic book properties were treated with the same care and offered the preference of an R-rating. This week alone, two films have been mentioned in regards to an alternative R-rated version — The Wolverine 3 and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice — but these are but rumors at present. Whether or not Marvel or DC will pull the trigger on such a risky decision remains to be seen, but the entertainment of such an idea bodes well for the superhero fans who likes a bit of violence, sex, and profanity in their movies.
With The Wolverine 3, an R-rating isn’t a terrible idea, since the source comic, Old Man Logan, may be the inspiration for the movie. The plot is pretty complex and violent, and it is open to change and development, but nothing is set in stone. However, the rumor mill was started this week when hints surfaced that a previous foe of Wolverine might return in The Wolverine 3 — that’s right; Victor Creed aka Sabretooth might have one more scrap with his half-brother, a possibility that garnered some weight from comments made by none other than Sabretooth himself, Liev Schreiber.
“We talked about it. I don’t know. He’s mentioned it to me. The Old Man Logan story – that’s appealing. That’s something that I can do. Old, being the operative word.”
Rumors persist that The Wolverine 3 will be Jackman’s final performance as Logan, a role he has played since 2000, and having Schreiber back as his estranged half-brother would be a great way to send the character off. No other returns have been confirmed or rumored, but the clash between Logan and Creed was one of the highlights of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and a scene that many Logan fans feel could have been expanded on. The producers may now have the chance to grant the fans’ wish, but if Sabretooth features, he has an A-list of superhero co-stars to contend with.
If Old Man Logan is indeed the source material, and they follow it accurately, the R-rating will be favored — the comic is written by Mark Millar, the brains behind mature comics Kick-Ass, Wanted, and Marvel fan favorite, Civil War. The comic features heavy violence, scenes of slaughter, several shocking deaths, and cameos from a host of Marvel characters, including Bruce Banner/Hulk, Red Skull, and Hawkeye. One particularly graphic scene shows old man Logan and old man Banner going toe-to-toe in the ultimate, deadly smackdown.
Directed by James Mangold and starring Hugh Jackman, The Wolverine 3 opens in the UK on March 2, 2017, and in the U.S on March 3.
