It’s been 22 years since Kurt Cobain died, and to mark the occasion, his daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, has decided to release a statement via social media. At the time of his death, Frances Bean was barely a toddler.

Throughout her childhood, Frances Bean Cobain hasn’t reflected on her father’s death. With the release of the documentary Montage of Heck which she helped put together, Frances has opened up about what it feels like to be the daughter of the Nirvana frontman. Years before, Frances remained out of the spotlight, and still to this day, would much rather focus on her artwork than to draw attention to herself for being the product of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.

That said, to mark the 22-year anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death, Frances Bean took to Instagram to honor her father and rock legend.

Other tributes followed in suit.

Just several weeks ago, she honored her father on his birthday as well:

The last and first time she spoke about Kurt significantly was during the release of the documentary. In an interview with Rolling Stone , Frances Bean Cobain said of her father’s psyche at the time of his death, “Kurt got to the point where he eventually had to sacrifice every bit of who he was to his art, because the world demanded it of him. I think that was one of the main triggers as to why he felt he didn’t want to be here and everyone would be happier without him.”

She continued.

“[But] in reality, if he had lived. I would have had a dad. And that would have been an incredible experience.”

One revelation that Frances revealed is she doesn’t have a taste for her father’s grunge music. When asked about Nirvana, Frances said, “I don’t really like Nirvana that much [grins]. Sorry, promotional people, Universal. I’m more into Mercury Rev, Oasis, Brian Jonestown Massacre [laughs]. The grunge scene is not what I’m interested in.”

She went on to say that while she doesn’t like Nirvana’s overall catalogue of music, she appreciates “Dumb” because of the perception that Kurt had about himself on drugs and off of them. She also likes Nirvana’s “Territorial Pi**ings” off of their infamous “Nevermind” album.

Of his large shadow, Cobain’s daughter said that she realized at the age of 15 that he was inescapable. “Even if I was in a car and had the radio on, there’s my dad. He’s larger than life and our culture is obsessed with dead musicians. We love to put them on a pedestal. If Kurt had just been another guy who abandoned his family in the most awful way possible… But he wasn’t.”

The last we heard from Frances Bean is her impending divorce from Isaiah Silva after less than two years of marriage. Frances, who didn’t inform her mother, Courtney, of her marriage, said that she’s “open to paying spousal support.” She also claims that her estranged husband has “no claim” on her father’s money, which belongs to Frances.

As for her relationship with her mother, Courtney, they have recently reconciled after being estranged for years. They promoted Montage of Heck together, and have been photographed out and about with each other.
