A man walking down the street was hit in the head with a knife that fell from an eighth-story balcony.

At first, he wasn’t sure what happened other than experiencing a strange, heavy feeling on top until a passerby told him that he had a knife stuck in his head. At that moment, the man’s head began seriously hurting, but he managed to walk an additional 100 yards despite the pain before he could no longer continue.

The potentially life-threatening incident involving a knife from the sky occurred last Thursday morning in the city of Guangyuan, in Sichuan province.

The London Telegraph reports that the man “was passing underneath a high-rise apartment block, a five-inch kitchen knife had fallen from an eighth-floor balcony, embedding itself up its hilt in the left side of his head, but without piercing his skull.”

Bystanders called police, and the victim, identified as Xiao Yunzhi, 57, was rushed to the hospital where doctors removed the knife. As of Monday, he was still in the ICU in stable condition. Commenting on this incident, his sister said, “It was terrifying to see. The knife handle was sticking out of the top.” The man reportedly was on his way to the supermarket when this happened.

According to authorities, the owner of the knife may have left it next to a flowerpot on the balcony, and the wind blew it off the ledge of the high-rise apartment building. The owner subsequently visited Xiao Yunzhi at the hospital to apologize and to pay some of the medical bills.

Xiao has become something of a folk hero in China for his calm demeanor during this horrible ordeal that could have resulted in death or a brain injury. As a result, he has acquired the nickname “Calm Brother.” Fortunately, he is expected to make a full recovery.
