Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are squaring off against Kendrick Lamar for Best Rap Album at this year’s Grammy Awards. However, just because Macklemore is up for the honor doesn’t necessary mean he thinks he should win it.

The rapper was recently named by The Source as the publication’s Man of the Year . During his chat with the magazine, Macklemore revealed that Kendrick Lamar should probably take home the trophy for Best Rap Album at the upcoming awards ceremony.

When asked how he would feel if The Heist won the award for Best Rap Album, the rapper said he thought things could get a little ugly. Should Macklemore and Ryan Lewis take home the honor, then he firmly believes that “hip-hop is going to be heated.”

“In terms of [that category], I think it should go to [Kendrick Lamar]. He’s family. TDE is family, and I understand why Hip-Hop would feel like Kendrick got robbed [if he didn’t win]. I’m not trying to compare albums; I think you can make an argument for both. With that being said, I am a huge supporter of what Kendrick does,” Macklemore explained.

He continued, “And because of that, I would love to win in a different category. We obviously had massive success on commercial radio, and I think that, in ways, ‘The Heist’ was a bigger album, but Kendrick has a better rap album.”

If Macklemore and Ray Lewis end up getting the trophy, then the rapper is totally prepared for Kanye West to swoop in and steal the spotlight. There’s a very strong possibility that Yeezus could get a little upset if his current tour mate doesn’t get the respect he deserves.

Macklemore also told The Source that hip-hop fans were a little quick to pass judgment on him based on the success of the single “Thrift Shop.” However, the rapper said he understands if some people are still a little skeptical.

“People are rightfully skeptical of white people making hip-hop. They’re gonna say, ‘Let me hear him rap. Let me hear an interview.’ Before we sold a million copies of the album, when it was just ‘Thrift Shop,’ before it became massive, they were putting us in a box,” he said.

The rapper added, “The song almost got too big. People weren’t able to see the rest of the album for what it was. They put us in the one-hit wonder box.”
