Ken Ham: Mythbusters Adam Savage And Jamie Hyneman Invited To Debate

Last year, Bill Nye appeared at the Creation Museum in Kentucky for a debate with Ken Ham. Mythbusters stars Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage are Ham’s next pair of targets. In a blog post, the Creation evangelist challenged the pair, as he spoke of the disdain Savage expressed for the facility during an interview.

In the interview in question, Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Savage and Hyneman appeared in an Ohio show Friday night, November 20. Less than an hour’s drive from the Creation Museum, located in Petersburg, Kentucky, an interviewer wondered if the Mythbusters duo had plans to stop by.

Savage responded, saying he’d be interested in seeing the museum, in much the way that one is “interested” in gawking at a car wreck one passes on the road, but that he felt conflicted about his hypothetical appearance lending any credence to the displays in the museum, which Adam said were so far removed from any actual scientific data that they were “not even wrong.”

The Creation Museum includes exhibits showing humans and dinosaurs living together, and others describing what Ham and his team of creation scientists believe are the errors in the fossil record, carbon dating, and virtually everything geologists believe about the age of the earth.

Those who followed the debate between Ken Ham and Bill Nye will likely remember that a number of scientists and secularists pleaded with Nye not to engage in the debate, because they feared it would do exactly what Savage says.

“Lend them a credibility as something that’s debatable.”

The phrasing Savage uses there suggests that debate over the matter of creationism vs. evolution isn’t something he’s anywhere near considering. He has also tweeted in the past about his opinion regarding debates about evolution.

Still, Ham has issued the invitation, and after Nye’s debate at the venue last year, many of those who had initially opposed the interaction said that it had been done as well as possible, and far better than had been expected.

In his invitation, on his blog, Ken Ham issued something of a challenge, saying that his team of scientists are the real “myth busters” — suggesting that evolutionary biology (and any other field of science containing evidence for an Earth older than several thousand years) are the real “myths,” and that if Adam and Jamie showed up for a visit, it would shake their belief in evolution.

“In meeting with these academics and scientists, and touring our world-class museum with its stunning science exhibits, he will discover that evolution is a myth and gets busted for what it is—and he will learn the truth about the God who created him, that he has a sin nature, and is in need of salvation.”

There’s no question that if the Mythbusters duo took up the challenge, the event would be as big as Ham’s debate with Bill Nye, and that the results would likely be about the same — all viewers coming away with the conviction that their own views were proven right in the debate, and that the side they supported beforehand “won.”

Still, Bill Nye afterward told the Center For Inquiry that if the debate made people think and question, it was worth the effort.

“I very much hope this whole business galvanizes the people…to take the time to think critically about creationism and to vote to remove it from science classrooms and texts. I frankly hope that in the coming few years not a single student in Kentucky is indoctrinated by the Answers in Genesis facilities and staff.”

As for Adam and Jamie, they haven’t yet announced what they’ll be doing now, with the show and tour both coming to an end. A Ken Ham vs. Mythbusters debate would, without doubt, be one way to end that particular phase of their careers with a big bang.
