Kellogg has just announced a recall of their Nutri-Grain Eggo due to a possible listeria contamination. Fans of Netflix’s Stranger Things have already started in with the memes in what is, arguably, a golden opportunity for cross promotion. But first, here’s the important information, including how to know if your Eggo waffles are a part of the recall.
The following statement was released via the FDA website .
“Kellogg Company today announced a voluntary recall of approximately 10,000 cases of Kellogg’s® Eggo® Nutri-Grain® Whole Wheat Waffles because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. No other Eggo products are impacted by this recall.”
According to the FDA in regard to the Eggo waffle recall, Listeria can be a very dangerous bacterium due to the following reasons.
“Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
According to the statement, there have been no reports of illness yet as a result of the contaminated waffles and this recall is a precautionary issue.
However, if you have purchased Eggo waffles recently and are from any of the following 25 states of the U.S., Kellogg is insisting you discard the product and contact the company for a full refund. Consumers can call 1-800-962-1413, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. ET or by visiting their website’s contact page . U.S. states affected: CO, CT, DE, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, VA, VT, WI, WY.
The Eggo waffles affected by this recall are the Kellogg’s Eggo Nutri-Grain Whole Wheat Waffles, UPC code 38000 40370, in the 12.3 oz (10 ct) size with the best before dates of NOV21 17 and NOV22 17.
As soon as news broke about the Eggo waffle recall, people took to social media with their Stranger Things -inspired comments. For reference to those who haven’t yet watched this TV series in Netflix, in Stranger Things , one character, Eleven (Lillie Bobby Brown), has a passion for Eggo waffles. Throughout the series, Eleven is seen consuming Eggo waffles in what is probably the best product placement in a television series ever. At one point Eleven even steals as many Eggo waffles as she can carry when she is starving and has no money to purchase them legitimately (not that we’re advocating that, especially after the recall).

With no one yet being reportedly affected by the waffle recall, it seems the only victim in this contamination so far is Eleven.

Already people have started issuing reminders of how not to discard your Eggo waffles, using Hopper (David Harbour) as an example.
Some fans even suggested the outbreak originated in Hawkins, Indiana. Others are even blaming Hopper for the listeria outbreak thanks to him placing Eggo waffles in the woods and not storing them correctly as per Kellogg’s guidelines.
Other fans of Stranger Things were concerned at Eleven’s reaction when she hears about the Eggo waffle recall.

At the end of the day, with the Eggo waffle recall, while it may be a bummer, at least no one has become ill.
