Kate Mara Goes Blonde: ‘I Didn’t Want To Be Defined By My Hair’

Kate Mara has admitted that she recently tried out a different array of hairstyles because she didn’t want to be “defined by [her] hair color.”

Over the last few months, the House Of Cards actress has been seen sporting a bob, as well as gradually lightening it to a blonde tinge too.

Mara has now told People that although she lobbed over a hefty amount of her mane just for fun, she had to change the color for a movie. Plus, she also admitted that her new locks make it “so much easier.”

The actress also confirmed that she had another very good reason for the change in her bouffant. “I was just ready to not be, this sounds really cheesy, but I didn’t want to be defined by my hair color,” she told the publication. “My hair has always been crazy long and I was just ready to let that go.”

Inspired by her recent foray into the unknown, Mara has confirmed that she is still experimenting with new looks. And who can blame her, because she had her previous, auburn colored, hairstyle for several years.

Mara noted, “Obviously the color changes the way makeup looks and the way colors look. With my natural red hair I gravitate more towards color, and with the blonde hair I like to wear more neutral things like black and white.”

Meanwhile, during a Q&A with The Seattle Times , Mara discussed the return of House Of Cards, season two of which will begin on Netflix on Feb 14.

Mara revealed that she originally took the role of Zoe Barnes, who she describes as a “very, very strong-willed, ambitious, ballsy, reporter,” because she was so impressed with the show’s cast and crew.

“I was just thrilled to be working with David Fincher and the cast. You know, Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright are two people that I’ve always wanted to work with,” she declared. “The expectation of it doing well and that sort of thing was just the cherry on top. It could have failed miserably, and sure that would be disappointing, but the experience of working with those people and the challenge of that is really why I got involved.”

Meanwhile, she also downplayed any sibling rivarly between herself and her sister, fellow actress Rooney Mara who has appeared in The Social Network and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Kate confirmed, “when it comes to acting, there is nobody more supportive of me than my sister.”
