Liverpool suffered their third defeat in their last six Premier League games on Saturday against West Ham United, with their new manager, Jurgen Klopp, criticizing his team and he insisted that they’d only given 95 percent during the encounter.
West Ham United won by two goals to zero over Liverpool, with Michail Antonio heading home after just 10 minutes, beating Nathaniel Clyne to the cross and then powering his header past Simon Mignolet.
Liverpool tried to muster up some chances to draw level, but the closest they came was when their midfielder Emre Can was denied by the crossbar towards the end of the first half. Then, just ten minutes into the second half, Andy Carroll scored against his former club to give West Ham an extra goal advantage that Liverpool never looked like clawing back.
After the game, Jurgen Klopp was rather furious with his players for only giving 95 percent in the contest. Speaking to the BBC , Klopp rather emphatically insisted, “This is not a day to be disappointed, this is a day to be angry.”
“It was not enough from my team today,” Klopp continued. “The decisive moments were there, but we were not there 100 percent. We could have done much better. We had our moments, we tried, but if you fight at 95 percent then it’s not enough. It’s my responsibility.”
Jurgen Klopp’s comments immediately led to reports that he wasn’t happy with his current crop of players at Liverpool, and there is speculation that the German will make a number of signings in the January transfer window. Sky Sports have reported that Liverpool will even announce that Marko Grujic as Klopp’s first signing at Anfield in the very near future, with Liverpool set to purchase him from Red Star Belgrade for £5.1 million ($8 million).
To make matters even worse for Liverpool, Andy Carroll was the man who scored one of the goals in West Ham’s victory. Carroll actually transferred to West Ham from Liverpool, where his tenure was rather fraught with disappointment.
Liverpool spent the rather huge sum of £35 million ($51 million) on Andy Carroll when they bought him from Newcastle United, but he never came close to proving his worth and instead only scored six goals during the 44 games he played for the club, as injuries and loss of form stopped Carroll from achieving his full potential.
“Now he looks fit to me,” the Croatian coach declared, via the Express . “Basically we are talking a lot about him; ‘Andy this, Andy that, Andy for England,’ but now he is fit and it is all about him now.”
Bilic then added, “Is he going to look after himself, work hard, train, rest, to maintain his fitness, or to even make it better? And then, and only then, he will become a great asset for us. It is up to him. But I expect him to stick to what he was like recently. He would be very, very stupid to do otherwise.”
