Johnny Depp went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday for the first time, where he proceeded to reveal his inspiration for Willy Wonka and Edward Scissorhands.

Depp stated of his role as Willy Wonka in the 2005 adaptation of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” that:

“Certain ingredients you add to these characters … Willy Wonka, for example, I imagined what George Bush would be like … incredibly stoned. And thus was born my version of Willy Wonka.”

With that said, how many of you will be re-watching “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory tonight?

Depp has been known for fantastical characters, like Wonka, Edward Scissorhands, and Jack Sparrow, from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy. In each of these characters, the 48-year-old actor has been able to bring a sense of magic (and in most cases a glorious sense of humor), making his movies unique.

When speaking about his inspiration for Edward Scissorhands, Depp likens the character to the idea of being a newborn, and the idea that everything he is discovering is new and exciting. He also likened the character’s loyalty to a dog he once had.

And his ability to insert a level of hilarity into his characters? Johnny Depp states:

“Anywhere that you can find a moment of irreverence or absurdity, I’ll stick it right in there — sometimes to the dismay of the director and certainly, the studio.”

To commemorate the occasion, Ellen also presented the popular actor with a monogrammed bracelet, which reads “Johnny and Ellen, 5.8.12.”

Johnny Depp’s new movie, “The Dark Shadows,” directed by Tim Burton, is set to release on May 11th.
