Former world heavyweight champion Smokin’ Joe Frazier has died, losing his battle with liver cancer, his family confirmed.

Frazier, 67, has been diagnosed with liver cancer just four weeks ago .

Frazier is best known for his deadly left hook and classic fights with Muhammad Ali. They had three bouts in the 1970s, namely: “The Fight of the Century,” “Muhammad Ali v Joe Frazier II” and “The Thrilla in Manila.” Frazier won the first fight. Ali captured the two remaining.

In a statement, his family said:

“He transitioned from this life as ‘One of God’s Men,’ on the eve of November 7, 2011 at his home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We thank you for your prayers for our father and vast outpouring of love and support. Respectfully, we request time to grieve privately as a family. Our father’s home going celebration will be announced as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding.”
