Jim Ross: Bill Goldberg Vs. Brock Lesnar Shouldn’t Be The Main Event Of ‘Survivor Series’

The biggest story in WWE over the last week has been the return of Bill Goldberg, who hasn’t been a part of professional wrestling for a dozen years. For now, it looks like he’ll only have one match before hanging up the tights for good, and that one match will likely be the main event of next month’s Survivor Series show. However, according to a WWE Hall of Famer, Goldberg’s return match — which will be against Brock Lesnar — shouldn’t close Survivor Series.

While speaking on his weekly podcast — The Ross Report — former WWE play-by-play man Jim Ross gave his opinion on Goldberg’s return, and revealed why he thinks the ex-WCW and WWE World Heavyweight Champion shouldn’t be in the Survivor Series main event.

“I don’t think [Brock Lesnar vs. Bill Goldberg] will close the show. I would not put the match on last at Survivor Series. It’s a special attraction, and I think that Lesnar will probably win. I think the match will go 15 [minutes] bell-to-bell.”

As of this writing, we only know of two matches that will be taking place at Survivor Series, and one of them is Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter , there may not be another singles match on the entire show because WWE will be focusing a lot more on doing traditional Survivor Series- style elimination matches. So, if that is what they’re going to do, it’ll be hard for them to close the show with any other match. Furthermore, Goldberg vs. Lesnar is, by far, the biggest match on the show, so it should go on last.

While JR — along with a lot of other people — is excited to see Goldberg back in a WWE ring, he said that he expects the ex-WCW megastar to be booed at next month’s pay-per-view. Why? Because it’s taking place in Canada, which is where Brock Lesnar currently resides. Also, Goldberg ended the career of Canadian professional wrestling legend Bret “The Hitman” Hart back in 2000, which is something that Canadian wrestling fans haven’t forgotten.

“I think that in Toronto, Lesnar will be the fan favorite. He’s living in Saskatchewan, so he’s adopting Canada as his home country. And the fact that Goldberg had bad PR from the match with Bret Hart, where Bret suffered the concussion that essentially ended his career.”

There has been a rumor going around that WWE does want to have Goldberg wrestle more than once, and that he could end up facing The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33 , which is a match that Goldberg has expressed interest in having. Of course, The Undertaker was a full time wrestler during Goldberg’s first WWE run that only lasted a year, but the two men were on different shows, as Goldberg was on Raw, and The Undertaker was on SmackDown.

Goldberg, who’s 49, hasn’t wrestled a match since the spring of 2004, so most people are expecting him to be a bit rusty when he steps into the ring at Survivor Series on November 20. But, he’s still in great shape, so he probably won’t look horrible when he returns to the ring next month.

The official Twitter page of the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York is advertising Goldberg’s November 14 Raw appearance as his “in-ring return,” which has a lot of people thinking that he’ll wrestle on that show. But, at least for right now, it looks like the only match he’ll be having is with Brock Lesnar on November 20.

Goldberg is scheduled to make only two more appearances on Raw before his big match on Survivor Series, so he won’t be a weekly character leading up to his match in Toronto next month.
