Jack Kerouac’s “On The Road” isn’t the only piece of classic literature being turned into a film this year. Leonardo DiCaprio and Baz Luhrmann are currently working on an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.”

The first trailer for “The Great Gatsby” hit the internet today and the most surprising thing about the 2 minute clip is the music choice made by Luhrmann.

Tobey McGuire starts his short narrative saying, “New York, 1922,” but the music is far from the free-wheeling jazz era of Gatsby’s novel. The clip starts with Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church In The Wild” as the principle characters, and more importantly the setting, are introduced.

The hip-hop song is followed by Jack White’s cover of U2’s “Love Is Blindness.

MTV reports that the music choices made by Luhrmann shouldn’t be surprising to any of his fans.

After all, he did use Coldplay in his rendition of Romeo Juliet, and Beck, Christina Aguilera, and Fatboy Slim in Moulin Rouge.

But will Jay-Z, Kanye West, Jack White and U2 work in “The Great Gatsby?”

Here’s the trailer for “The Great Gatsby.”

Does the modern music work with the 1920’s setting? If you were making the soundtrack for “The Great Gatsby,” what other modern songs would you use?
