James Gunn isn’t going to let any crazy Ant-Man rumors go unchecked.
After Marvel announced that Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright would no longer spearhead the project, the internet started frantically tossing around possible candidates for his replacement. James Gunn was one of the names that recently popped up, thanks in part to his involvement with the studio’s upcoming action flick Guardians of the Galaxy .
News of Gunn’s involvement in the project arrived courtesy of Comic Book Movie , an article that has since disappeared from the internet. However, it’s easy to access the deleted story with a little help from Google’s cache.
Here’s what the site had to say about the situation:
“My source has informed me that Marvel is looking at none other than James Gunn, Director of the upcoming ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ The reason for this is because Marvel needs someone who can work within their limitations as well as be informed as to the current progress of the film. James’ work on ‘Guardians’ has not only pleased Marvel executives in early screenings, but it’s also proven to both Kevin Feige and the Marvel executives that he’s capable of working alongside Marvel. As a Director in the MCU, he’s privy to the story of Ant-Man, and would be able to jump in without very little catching up being.”
Although the site talked a good game, apparently it was just a silly rumor designed to get people buzzing. To help calm the flurry of inquiries and mentions on Twitter, James Gunn decided to address the situation on his official feed.

In short: James Gunn isn’t directing Ant-Man for Marvel. As of this writing, it’s unknown who will end up taking the reins on the project. All we know for sure at this point is that neither Gunn nor Edgar Wright will steer the adaptation toward the finish line. Feel free to start speculating about other possible replacements as soon as you’ve finished reading this article.
And before you ask, it’s probably unlikely that Avengers director Joss Whedon will take over for Wright on the movie. Both he and Gunn were pretty bummed about Wright’s departure, so it would definitely seem a little strange if they jumped into the director’s chair after showing their support for the guy.
