The Intel HD 4000 GPU will receive a 10% performance boost when the company launched a new driver upgrade.

The HD 4000 GPU is found inside Intel’s third-generation mobile ‘Ivy Bridge’ Core processors. According to Ultrabook News the firmware update will offer various bug fixes while also boosting performance. The driver update is also expected to improve battery life for Ultrabook users.

Intel is scheduling the update for an undisclosed date in April.

Speaking at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco an Intel rep said update v. 15.31 is intended for Intel’s next-generation ‘Haswell’ chips, a chipset due out in the second quarter, 2013. However, Intel realized the importance of the update for current users so is choosing to release the driver early for HD 4000 GPU users.

Also added through the new driver is support for OpenCL 1.2, an update that brings new graphics capabilities for HD 4000 GPUs. While the update will be a welcomed addition for current third-generation users, the Haswell processor will still double graphics performance compared to the Intel HD 4000 GPU.

Windows users can check for the new HD 4000 GPU driver update by using the update utility . Please note that the update utility will also show other upgrades also available for your GPU.

Intel at this time has not revealed whether or not a similar update will be made for MacBook Air and MacBook Pros. Several Apple products incorporate the HD 4000 integrated GPU. Given Intel’s attempts to improve its chipset across all platform it is likely that the company will offer an Apple based update in the future.

Will you be updating your Intel HD 4000 GPU with the new driver or will you look for a new system that incorporates the Haswell processor?
