Avengers: Infinity War is just six months away, and co-directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo have confirmed the film will have more surprises than any other Marvel film to date.
Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther both have preceding release dates to Infinity War , but the third Avengers installment seems to have fans more excited than either of the standalone films.
Joe co-directed Infinity War with his brother Anthony, and the siblings have blockbuster and Marvel fan-favorites Captain America: The Winter Soldier , Ant-Man , and Captain America Civil War under their belts. Those three films have proven to be some of the highest rated and fan-loved in the entire MCU.
The Russo brothers recently sat down with CNET to discuss the upcoming Avengers flick, and promised lots of surprises for fans. Joe confirmed there will be plenty of unexpected characters, in a film already rumored to have over 60 Marvel characters.
Joe also teased a lot of these surprises come in character interaction. One new friendship that has been confirmed is of Hulk and Rocket Raccoon from Guardians of the Galaxy . Mark Ruffalo recently teased the new friendship when speaking with USA Today , calling it “a very funny relationship.”
Fans can also expect past minor characters to become more involved in Infinity War . While Joe didn’t confirm any specific characters, it’s possible players like Mantis ( GOTG ), Betty Ross ( The Incredible Hulk ), Wong ( Dr. Strange ), and Harley Keener ( Iron Man 3 ) could become more evolved in the upcoming film.
New interesting characters were also teased by Joe. Several rumors and fan theories speculate Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) will appear in Infinity War , but it has not been confirmed. It appears Avengers 3 will be opening doors for all sorts of new superheroes in Marvel’s Phase Four.
Anthony also compares Infinity War to a heist film, as Thanos takes on the quest of finding every Infinity Stone. The brothers used inspiration from popular heist films in the movie, as Thanos always appears to be one step ahead of the Avengers.
Currently the six Infinity Stones are spread throughout the galaxy, but that won’t be a problem for the mad-titan. The Tesseract (Space Stone) is in Asgard Vaults, the Aether (Reality Stone) is with the Collector, the Orb (Power Stone) is with the Nova Corps, Loki’s Scepter/Vision (Mind Stone) is within Vision himself, the Eye of Agamotto (Time Stone) is with Dr. Strange, and the Soul Stone has yet to be seen in a Marvel film. This likely means the Soul Stone will appear in Thor: Ragnarok , or more likely, Black Panther .
Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018.
