One Game of Thrones star has admitted that he was disappointed about his death scene. Well, not the actual scene, but at the decision that his character was being written out of it. A Song of Ice and Fire lovers will know that his character has not been written out just yet.

This is all about Ser Barristan Selmy, played by Ian McElhinney. As The Guardian’s recap of Sunday night’s Game of Thrones episode states, Ser Barristan met his maker in a shock decision. He and Unsullied leader Grey Worm died together after being trapped by the Sons of the Harpy, despite bravely attempting to fight them off. At least fans can know they went down fighting for their queen.

McElhinney did an interview with Entertainment Weekly , where he admitted to being disappointed at the decision . He had already read the books, and knew that his character played an important role in the books. Excited about his upcoming scenes, he was later shocked to see that he was not in the show that much. He questioned whether the dates were right, and whether he would be written out of the show. It was after that that the two Game of Thrones show runners admitted that he was going to be killed off.

This is just another change that Game of Thrones has made from the books. This season has already seen Sansa Stark go back to Winterfell, being promised to Ramsey Bolton as a bride. The show runners have had to make a decision to make substantial changes because the show will definitely overtake the books at some point.

Despite being disappointed in the decision to be killed off, McElhinney admitted that the death scene is a “lovely scene.” It sets up the future well, which is likely when Tyrion Lannister and Daeneyrs Targaeryn finally meet and try to form some sort of alliance.

One of McElhinney’s favorite scenes was in the first season, when he says “to hell with this” to King Joffrey and storms out. That led to his arrival in Meereen, where he could show his true support to who he believes should sit on the Iron Throne.

Game of Thrones at least gave Ser Barristan a good ending. He went out on a high, proving that he was the great knight that he had always been said to be. There was also the moment with Daenerys, when he tells her a story about her brother Rhaegar. While he is gone from Game of Thrones , he will certainly not be forgotten.
