Ford Edge Recall: 5,500 Vehicles Recalled Due To Fuel Leaks

Ford is to recall thousands of its Edge crossovers due to fears that the vehicles may develop a fuel leak that could in turn cause a fire.

In total, 5,499 Ford Edge SUVs are to be recalled by the auto manufacturer, according to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. On 2012 models with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, the metal casing of the fuel line’s pulse damper could reportedly crack. As the pulse damper prevents fuel from moving back and forth in the line when the engine’s injectors open and close, a cracked pulse damper could lead to fuel odors, leakage, and, in a worst-case scenario, a fire.

This is not the first time that issues with fuel leaks on the Edge have been recognized; in May, Ford said it found 11 warranty claims for the problem on Edge models with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine. Any models returned in the Ford Edge recall will have their fuel line replaced by dealers, if required, from September 24.

Ford has said that certain cars with specific part numbers will not require replacements, but Edge owners are being asked to call Ford at 1-866-436-7332 to make sure.

This latest recall is the second in 2012 for Ford; the company has recalled the compact 2013 Escape crossover no less than three times this year, with fuel line leaks responsible for at least one of those recalls. On the Escape, the fuel line leaks were occurring on the smaller 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine.
