A wrong-way driver crashed into four fraternity brothers in another vehicle in the proper lane on Sunday morning in Florida, and the fiery crash was captured on cell phone video.
A 2001 Ford Expedition SUV traveling south in the northbound lane of I-275 in Tampa crashed into the four University of South Florida fraternity members in a Hyundai Sonata. Occupants of both vehicles tragically died at the scene.
In the video embedded above (partially NSFW for language) shot by a driver in a different vehicle on the highway, she asks rhetorically of the wrong-way driver, “what is he doing?” Once the SUV bursts into flame, she yells “oh my God…oh my God.”
In a statement, USF President Judy Genshalt said that “Mere words cannot convey the depth of shock and sadness this terrible event brings to all who knew and cherished these wonderful young men. Our hearts are heavy at the loss of such bright, energetic and optimistic young people who had promising futures ahead of them; to have their lives cut tragically short betrays our sense of fairness and security.”
The Florida Highway Patrol has the accident under investigation, including whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the wrong-way collision.
A fraternity brother of the four men who perished in the crash said of them that “They’re beautiful people, so young and ready for what’s in store for them. Some of them were about to graduate. All of them were taking tests for their degrees –LSATS, GRE, MCAT — in just a few moments, they were gone because of an oncoming car that they couldn’t expect.”
Separately, as The Inquisitr previously reported, a crash allegedly caused by a drunk driver driving in the wrong lane on the Pomona, Calif., freeway to the lives of sex people last Thursday. And in Ontario, Canada, a tractor-trailer driver was nearly hit head-on by another semi that was trying to pass a snowplow in oncoming traffic as filmed by dashcam video.
