Facebook Experiments With Trending Topics

As Facebook continues to work to stay prevalent in the ever growing world of social media, it has now started experimenting with trending topics.

According to AllThingsD Facebook is acting more like Twitter.

This can be seen through the introduction of Facebook Hashtags , which was introduced about two months ago, and now with Facebook Trending Topics.

The Inquisitr previously reported on the Facebook Hashtag feature saying that much like its function on Twitter, the hashtag can be added to posts and made clickable.

“Words that begin with the symbol will be automatically grouped together. When accessed, the hashtag displays the other mentions of its topic in other Facebook posts.”

Beginning Wednesday, Facebook will be rolling out their own version of trending topics, very similar to Twitter’s trending topics.

Facebook said the following in a statement to Mashable:

“Today we started running a small test that displays topics trending on Facebook. It is currently only available to a small percentage of U.S. users who use Facebook’s mobile web site (m.facebook.com) and is still in very early stages of development.”

For those lucky few who will have access to the new Facebook trending topics, this is what you’ll want to be looking for:

Those users who are part of the test group will notice a tile in their mobile news feed that lists one or more trending keywords (“Shark Week,” for example). If you tap on that topic, you’ll be shown posts from other users — including those you’re not directly connected to — mentioning those words.

This effort seems to be one of Facebooks many new features to help draw users back into using the social media platform.

How do you feel about Facebook’s experiments with trending topics? Do you think it will help draw in more users? Or do you think it will only bring on more frustrations from irritated users who are sick of all the changes?
