Electric Vehicles 10% of Sales in 2020, Nissan CEO Declares

Electric vehicles, such as Nissan’s Leaf version, are growing more an more attractive each day. With the rising cost of gas, any American who drives is sure to cringe when they take the dreaded trip to the gas station.

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn hopes to help out a bit. His goal? That electric cars will be 10% of the car sales market in 2020. Currently, there are 11,000 Nissan Leaf vehicles on the road in the U.S., and 27,000 worldwide. In order for Ghosn to succeed, these cars will need to be made more widely available, and most likely less expensive.

Ghosn, at a conference in New York, boasted that:

“I still believe they will be 10% of the market by 2020 in all the regions where electric vehicles are available…I have zero doubt that zero emission is here to stay.”

With the rising cost of gas in America, as well as the fact that, according to Ghosn, the pricey batteries and electric components required for electric vehicles is falling, creates hope.

Ghosn also commented that he believes most U.S. buyers would purchase an electric car if it were more affordable. Because of this, he also announced that Nissan will launch a new Leaf campaign to represent actual buyers.

He declared that, “Frankly, I am used to skeptics…thirteen years ago skeptics said the Renault-Nissan alliance would fail.”

Ghosn also stated that his goal for Nissan as a whole is to grow to 10 percent of the whole buyer market for automobiles, a goal that is entirely plausible, if Nissan’s Leaf continues to do well.
