Ed Sheeran is branching out again. Sheeran is one of the biggest pop stars on the planet and has recently branched out into acting. Sheeran has a role in The Bastard Executioner, a dark and violent medieval drama by Ed’s pal Kurt Sutter of Sons Of Anarchy fame. The Evening Standard may have described Sheeran’s acting as “slightly rubbish,” but it seems that nothing can hold Sheeran back. Not content with a massively successful singing career, Sheeran has now branched out into owning his own record label, Gingerbread Man Records.
Earlier today, Sheeran appeared on the BBC’s breakfast magazine program to plug the first release on his new label. As anyone who follows Sheeran’s career closely might guess, the record he was plugging is not his own. Instead, Sheeran popped up to plug Jamie Lawson’s eponymous album, which is released on Sheeran’s label tomorrow, October 9.

Lawson and Sheeran have been friends for a number of years, but where Ed’s career has gone stratospheric, Jamie’s career is yet to really take off. Lawson has already supported Sheeran on tour in the U.S., as a recent post on his Instagram account shows, and he will be supporting One Direction on their forthcoming shows in Ireland.

During the live interview this morning, BBC presenter Louise Minchin asked Sheeran about his own struggles before his career really took off. In particular, Louise wanted to know about times when urban legend says that Sheeran slept on the London subway system because he had no home to go to. Like the gentleman and professional he is, Sheeran skillfully deflected the question by saying “well that happened a couple of time but we are not here to talk about me.”
Ed is clearly thrilled to have the opportunity to help out another artist. Sheeran told the interview that he had released music himself before getting signed so holding his own CD wasn’t such a big thrill as it was to hold the first release on his own label.
Sheeran says that “holding a physical album of someone else’s that I have had something to do with is really cool.”
Ed talked about how launching his own label came about. Sheeran explained that he had toured with Passenger (Mike Rosenburg) for a couple of years and had pestered his label to sign him. The label were not keen as they didn’t “get” Passenger’s music. When Rosenberg did finally get signed his single “Let Her Go” sold over 12 million copies and the album Little Lights sold over three million copies.
Sheeran says that after that success, the label said “Ed, do you want to set up a label?”
Sheeran says that he couldn’t believe that no one had signed Lawson, so as soon as his label was launched, he got on the phone to him straight away. Lawson recalled a drunken conversation he had with Sheeran where Ed had said that “he might be able to help me out.” Given that the pair had been drinking when the promise was made, he admits that he was both surprised and delighted when Sheeran made good on his promise.

Sheeran has built an incredible reputation as one of the nicest guys in the music business, and according to the Manchester Evening News, he showed his caring nature again today. After his appearance at the BBC’s media centre in Salford, Sheeran spent some time braving the chilly October weather as he chatted to fans and posed for selfies outside the studio.
Earlier this week, it was reported by the Inquisitr that Sheeran had taken time out to make an onstage appearance to play guitar and sing with upcoming star James Bay during Bay’s gig in Cambridge.
Ed Sheeran is becoming almost as famous for his kindness as he is for his music.
