Former New Yankees pitcher Don Larsen, the only hurler to throw a perfect game in the World Series, auctioned his uniform from that game for $756,000.

Larsen tossed the perfect game for the Yankees on October 8, 1956, against the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game Five of the series. The online auction was handled by Steiner Sports Marketing.

As The Inquisitr previously reported , Larsen decided to use the proceeds to help pay the college tuition for his grandkids:

“I’m auctioning the uniform to provide my grandsons with enough money for a college education. What the uniform actually sells for is not that important to me; whatever happens, happens. I’m just hoping for enough to help the grandkids.”

Larsen compiled a career 81-91 record over a 15-year MLB career with seven teams. He played on two World Series championship teams with the Yankees and was the 1956 World Series MVP and Babe Ruth award winner.

According to ESPN , the Wednesday night auction put about $370,000 into the pocket of former Indiana basketball coach Bobby Knight also for his grandchildren’s college costs. Knight sold several championship rings and other memorabilia.

Earlier this year when he decided to put his uniform on the market, Don Larsen commented that …

“I really don’t know what it is worth, But what I do know is that in terms of historic importance, my uniform is a part of one of the greatest moments in the history of sports. I have thought about that perfect game, more than once a day, every day of my life since the day I threw it.”
