When people hear the words ‘Like a girl’, they usually assume that the expression is meant to berate or ridicule about the way things are being done. A new campaign via YouTube earnestly seeks to destroy this ugly gender stereotype.
Actions that are poorly executed in a feeble manner are often described as being done ‘like a girl’. “You run like a girl”, or “You throw like a girl” or “You fight like a girl” are all everyday expressions that everybody uses to demean the person and the action as substandard or weak. ‘But why are those actions termed as ‘like a girl’?’ asks the video that has gone viral on YouTube, reported NY Daily News.
In a campaign conducted by Always, and titled #LikeAGirl, filmmaker and director Lauren Greenfield challenges the globally popular perception about adolescent girls. This perception crushes their confidence and stuffs them up with self-doubt. This happens so routinely and to such an extent that ‘like a girl’ starts to sound like an insult to them and they feel the need to discard ‘girly’ things, choices and characteristics.
The fear of being termed ‘girly’ haunts many teen girls. Greenfield has attempted to fight this fear in the video. The video takes on a simple approach to illustrate how and when ‘like a girl’ starts to sound like an insult. She asked a bunch of people, of both genders and different age groups to show her what it was like to run, fight and throw like a girl. The findings were really surprising.
All of the adults, male and female, depicted throwing, running and fighting ‘like a girl’ in a very silly, goofy way. Their actions clearly lacked the appropriate strength or even body movements. The adults clearly felt ‘like a girl’ meant that the action was incomplete and even lacked conviction, reported The Daily Beast.
But all that changed when an actual 10-year-old Dakota was asked to show the same actions. She executed the tasks with complete conviction, aggression and strength. When another young girl was asked what she understood when told to run like a girl, she simply replied, the term meant to “Run as fast as you can”.
The study proved that the expression ‘like a girl’ takes on a negative meaning right around puberty, when the misconceptions are directly implied and the girls feel humiliated owing to their perceived lack of strength.
Well, this video strongly proves that ‘like a girl’ should never mean, what it was being implied so far.
