David Duchovny is not happy that a recent article talking about the “myth” of sex addiction used his name and picture. The article called sex addiction an excuse “for men who are in trouble with their wives.”
You may recall that Duchovny entered rehab for sex addiction in 2008 after he briefly separated from wife Tea Leoni. Later Duchovny would go on to win a Golden Globe for his role as a womanizing novelist in the hit Showtime series Californication.
The original article written by clinical psychologist David J. Ley was posted in the New York Post and also named other famous celebrities who have used the “sex addiction” claim to talk down their affairs. Among those named were Tiger Woods and Michael Douglas.
According to Dr. Ley in his book “The Myth of Sex Addiction,” :
“Sex addiction is nothing more than a pop-psychology phenomenon.”
In his article Dr. Ley wrote:
“Sex has no tolerance or withdrawal effects. No one has ever died from being unable to have sex, nor has anyone ever overdosed from sex.”
Dr. Ley continues:
“The majority of men who enter sex- addiction treatment do so because they’re in trouble with their wives for infidelity or merely for wanting more sex than she does.”
The main argument in the article is that sex addiction has never been scientifically verified as a real illness.
David Duchovny’s lawyers responded with a statement of their own in which they stated:
“We understand that your book characterizes sex addiction as a ‘fictitious disease’ used as an excuse for irresponsible behavior. Mr. Duchovny objects to being associated with your book in any way.”
Do you think Dr. Ley has the right to name actors and other celebrities in his article considering he has no proof that sex addiction doesn’t actually exist on some level?
