Dave Coulier is someone forever enshrined in the minds of kids from the 80s and 90s first as Uncle Joey from Full House , and then as probably the guy that Alanis Morrisette wrote “You Oughta Know” for.

Since Dave Coulier was linked with the song, we’ve all tried for a decade and a half to suppress the image of the lovable Full House star engaging in an obscene act in a movie theater. But Coulier has done other projects since, appearing on the reality show The Surreal Life as well as hosting America’s Funniest People for a couple of seasons.

Dave Coulier has been pretty low-key lately though, especially contrasted with his fellow ABC sitcom alum Bob Saget, who has utilized his Full House fame to launch a second leg of his career in standup basically solely to shock audience members with an extremely blue act.

Okay, so everyone from Full House . Totally dirty.

Anyway, Coulier sat down with the Huffington Post to discuss his experiences on the seminal Friday night comedy show, and speaks in-depth about how he met Saget as well as the differences in getting gigs in the 80s versus today. Dave says Saget was actually his career inspiration:

“I met Bob when I was still a teenager. I was 18 years old and he was on a comedy short tour. He walked into a little comedy club in Detroit and I hadn’t even done much stand-up. I think I had been on stage two or three times. So Saget came in on this comedy short tour and did a guest set with two other comedians from the West Coast and I watched them and I said, ‘Oh man. These guys are so good. That’s what I want to be.’”

Coulier says that he crashed at Bob Saget’s house during lean times, before he hit it big on Full House :

“So I talked to Bob after that show and he said, ‘I’ll tell you what. You seem like a nice kid. Why don’t you give me a call when you get to LA?’ and I thought, ‘Oh sure. This is how it works.’ And he gave his phone number and I got to LA about six months later and called Bob. The irony of all of this is that when I didn’t have an apartment, I slept on Bob’s couch. [Laughs.] It’s just too weird.”

Do you have fond memories of Dave Coulier on Full House when you were a kid?
